For decades, countless research has been conducted to help improve job satisfaction for the Human Service Sector. Yet, this issue remains a relevant concern ̶ especially in the areas of workload management, burnout, and job advancement. Far too often, when workloads are too overwhelming, professionals quit, work piles up for the successor, and clients are unhappy. Similarly, senior employees are challenged with advancing in the workplace. Even middle management sometimes struggles with motivating employees to manage workloads while meeting metrics. Unfortunately, these examples create job dissatisfaction, a stressful work culture and practitioners desiring to leave the profession.

When service workers needs are met, job satisfaction and productivity improve. Other factors among human service workers that predict satisfaction related to development are:

  • Achievement or promotion
  • Salary level
  • Recognition
  • Relationships with supervisor and peers
  • Creating positive change
  • Problem solving
  • Team work/collaboration

 Can social workers and human service professionals improve job satisfaction through personal development planning? Yes! Statistics show that when you elevate yourself, you elevate others in the process. You can grow into a confident leader and advocate for conditions that leads to results. The following suggestions can be helpful in improving job satisfaction through development planning. First, avoid investing in continuing education units “CEUs” to only satisfy licensure requirements. Instead, invest in quality CEUs that will help advance your career. Second, create a personal development plan with your leader that targets both soft and technical skills. Third, seek consultation with a qualified career coach that understands the human services market to assist you with goal planning and achievement.
